Cannons Will Release ‘Everything Glows,’ Fifth Album, This Spring
Cannons, the L.A.-based indie-pop trio, will return with their fifth album, Everything Glows, on March 27. Ahead of the release date, though, the group will play a special sold-out gig at a hometown venue, the 1,200-capacity Fonda Theatre, and give fans a taste of the record with a new single, “Starlight,” on Friday. The track, which Rolling Stone got to preview, bops along at an even keel with synths, echoes, hand-claps and a catchy “Never let me down” chorus, which frontwoman Michelle Joy sings wistfully and with verve.
The trio wrote and recorded the LP as Joy recovered from fatigue, an anemia diagnosis, surgery, and a divorce. The singer, who cofounded the band in 2013 with guitarist Ryan Clapham and bassist-keyboardist Paul Davis, realized she had been pushing herself too much to make it onto the stage to promote Heartbeat Highway, the group’s 2023 album. So she credits Everything Glows, which the band teased with “All I Need” (and its opening lyrics, “Falling down again/I’m burning for you”), as a reflection of how she has rebuilt her life.
“Everything Glows finds beauty in moments that feel messy or unresolved,” the band tells Rolling Stone. “The songs move through longing, memory, and late nights, but always return to light, a feeling we wanted to introduce with our new single, ‘Starlight.’ It’s an album about staying open and letting yourself feel everything.”
All three musicians see the album as a group effort. As Joy recovered from her operation, Clapham and Davis continued working on the music and even presented Joy with lyrics for some of the songs. She appreciated the gesture, feeling seen for the difficult time she was soldiering through. Before long, they were all working together again. They wrote and recorded 16 songs during this time, paring the selection down to the 11 that appear on Everything Glows.
The band will be supporting the new album on a North American tour, which they’re co-headlining with Bob Moses. The trek kicks off in Phoenix a few days after Everything Glows comes out.
