Brits need a holiday to recover from UK’s sizzling summer heatwaves
The UK’s sweltering heatwaves have left Britons so drained that over half of us claim we need a holiday to recover from our scorching summer. Britain has suffered three heatwaves so far in 2026, with the year’s hottest temperature reaching a scorching 37.7C (99.9F) on June 26 – also making it the hottest June day in UK history.
Another UK heatwave could be declared this week as temperatures are once again forecast to intensify across England and parts of Wales, following some much-needed rain, with the mercury to climb as high as 35C (95F). Yellow heat health alerts have already been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for several regions from 9am on July 28 until 9am on July 31.
Now, new research by Vital Proteins reveals that long periods of heatwaves are taking their toll on the nation. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of Brits say that the sizzling heat and high night-time temperatures are leaving them drained of energy.
While more than half (56%) of us feel like they will need a holiday just to recover from a busy summer, rising to 79% among 18-25-year-olds.
Disrupted routines (25%) and the daily juggle of work and social commitments (17%) round out the list of things wearing us down.
More than a third (36%) say wearing less clothing makes them more conscious of their appearance, while 35% say being on holiday has the same effect.
Gen Z are most likely to describe themselves as feeling overwhelmed this summer, while Millennials are more likely to feel self-conscious and under pressure to maintain healthy habits.
More than a third (36%) say they actively try to maintain healthy habits while still enjoying themselves during the summer.
Staying hydrated (61%), spending time outdoors (50%) and being physically active (39%) rank among the most common ways people support their wellbeing during the season.
Over a quarter (26%) of 25-34-year-olds also prioritise taking vitamins or supplements during the summer months.
Jessica Gyateng, marketing director of Vital Proteins, Nestlé UK & Ireland, said: “Summer often brings a shift in routine, with holidays, social plans and more time spent outdoors all competing for our attention.
“That’s why it’s encouraging to see so many people focusing on simple habits that help them stay active and feel their best throughout the season.
“Our research suggests people aren’t looking for complicated wellness routines. Whether it’s a morning coffee, a post-workout smoothie or a healthy lunch enjoyed outdoors, consumers are increasingly looking for habits that slot naturally into their everyday lives.
“We want to help make wellbeing feel simple and easy to maintain, with products that can be easily incorporated into existing routines to support active, feel-good lifestyles.”
