A ‘stunning’ film centred on the life of one of Britain’s most cherished celebrities will be aired tonight on the BBC. The historical drama pays tribute to the life and career of Welsh legend and international superstar Richard Burton, earning high praise as ‘beautiful’ from viewers.

The biographical film of his early years, Mr Burton, features Toby Jones and Harry Lawtey in remarkable roles and will be shown tonight, Monday 10 November at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The film aims to recount the true tale of the bond between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a rebellious young pupil named Richard Jenkins. The film showcases Harry Lawtey as a youthful Burton, Toby Jones as his mentor Philip Burton, and Lesley Manville as Burton’s housekeeper.

The BAFTA Cymru award-winning film also includes Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Cis, Aneurin Bernard as her spouse Elfed, and Steffan Rhodri as Burton’s father.

The film opens in Port Talbot in 1942, where Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey) exists as a wayward schoolboy, torn between the strains of his impoverished family, a devastating war, and his personal aspirations. However, a fresh opportunity emerges when Richard’s innate flair for drama grabs the attention of his teacher, Philip Burton (BAFTA winner Toby Jones), reports the Mirror.

Under Philip’s watchful eye, the young man flourishes through rigorous mentorship and the caring support of his benevolent landlady, Ma Smith (Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville, The Crown).

Yet, as Richard edges closer to the theatrical world, the weight of his history threatens to derail his dreams permanently.

On film review platform Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer awarded it five stars, writing: “Very well done. If you had any idea of who you thought Richard Burton was this movie will dispel everything. A true story and a very human one. Great film and excellent acting especially by Mr Burton!”.

A second reviewer said: “Fantastic biography. Brilliantly acted and the screenplay was marvellous. If you haven’t been a fan of Toby Jones, this will make you one. Harry’s voice and character representation on-screen was nothing less than perfect. No rush, no non-sense, lovely relationship! Thanks Mark Evans for this gem. It will stay with us for a long time. Why are we still searching for new James Bond?

“Beautiful film! Harry Lawtey (of Industry fame) is magnificent – despite big Burton shoes to fill. He transitions from gawky teen to acclaimed actor with great finesse, and what a voice! Toby Jones is an excellent character actor,” said a third. “The scene in which he finally looses his rag is spellbinding. Lesley Manville is not subtle enough for film, in my view, but she lightens the tone. The screenplay is strong, authentic with lovely touches of humour. The scenery gorgeous. This film will appeal across generations – take the family!”.

Another person said: “Mr. Burton is a beautifully crafted film that lingers long after the credits roll. Anchored by a standout performance from its lead, the story weaves heart, humour, and a quiet intensity into a truly unforgettable experience. The direction is assured, allowing small moments to breathe while never losing narrative momentum. Every frame feels intentional, with gorgeous cinematography and a haunting score that elevates the emotional depth.

“Mr Burton is that rare kind of film-intimate yet expansive, personal yet universally resonant. It’s a moving, masterfully told story that deserves to be seen, felt, and celebrated.”

Mr Burton will air on Monday 10 November at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
