Baby formulas recalled as 36 infants ‘poisoned’ by toxin — full list

An urgent warning has been issued to parents and caregivers to check their baby formula products. The Food Standards Agency has urged people to check if they have  certain batches of formula and stop using them if so.

This week, specific batches of baby formula were recalled because of contamination with the toxin cereulide. So far, 36 infants in the UK have had suspected food poisoning as a result. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said they’ve received notifications of young children developing symptoms that include vomiting and diarrhoea.

None of the infants, who are around or under one years old, are reported to be gravely ill. Batches of Danone infant formula products were recalled today (February 6).

It follows previous notices from Nestle of SMA infant and follow-on formula products due to the same contamination issue. The FSA said: “All other batches of Cow & Gate, Aptamil, and Nestle SMA infant or follow-on formula not listed in the product recall notices remain safe to use.”

They added: “Danone and Nestle have confirmed they are no longer using ingredients from the affected supplier.”

Both companies have told the FSA that the recalled batches were made some time ago so are unlikely to be on the shop shelves.

However, they may still be in cupboards at home, so are asking anyone to check to see if they have them and to not use them.

Katie Pettifer, Chief Executive of the FSA, urged: “The risk of harm to children from cereulide contamination at these levels is low, but consuming it could cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. If your baby has recently consumed an affected batch and you are concerned about symptoms, contact your GP or call NHS 111.”
