‘Avoid any delays’ when sending parcels with DPD’s packaging method
DPD customers are being urged to steer clear of a common packaging blunder when sending parcels. The delivery service, which operates across the UK, offers guidance for its customers via its website. The most recent online advice covers how customers should package their items.
The guidance told customers: “DPD would like to share some recommendations and tips on the best way to package your items. Several things should be taken into consideration to avoid any delays.” On the webpage, DPD warns that people should refrain from reusing cardboard boxes when dispatching goods.
The company said: “Avoid using a carton more than once as its strength, and therefore the protection it offers, is significantly reduced when used multiple times.” When choosing packaging, DPD says customers should check that the box does not fold or bend under the weight of the contents. DPD explained: “Use good quality carton boxes that are strong and rigid.
“If the box bends or folds due to the weight of the contents it is not suitable. Ideally, for heavy loads, you should use carton boxes made of high-quality corrugated cardboard. These should preferably be double-walled to ensure strength, durability and protection.”
Equally important is not to underfill boxes. The delivery service said that underfilled boxes are more likely to collapse. All cartons should be sealed securely using shipping staples or strong tape, reports the Mirror.
DPD’s website added: “To ensure a smooth journey through our sortation hubs and network, it is important the packaging is suitable for our operation. This may vary depending on the contents of your parcel.
“Choosing the right packaging is the first step to ensuring your items will reach their destination in good condition. You should take into consideration the weight and the type of contents within your parcel. Manufacturer packaging or product packaging alone is generally not sufficient for courier transportation as it does not provide enough protection.”
Elsewhere, Parcelforce offers similar advice for customers. In its packaging guidelines, the delivery service said: “A corrugated cardboard box with a quality outer wrapping is best.
“Make sure the outer packaging is strong enough for the weight of the parcel. Items packed in kraft paper cannot be sent via our global express service. Please avoid reusing cardboard boxes because they weaken considerably after initial use.”
The delivery service also asks customers not to use materials that could stick to sorting equipment. Guidance found on the website explains: “To avoid delays or issues, do not use materials that stick to our sorting equipment, such as cling film, bubble wrap, string, or excessive tape.” Customers should check the guidelines with their courier before sending any parcels.
