Marist to Match NY Public University Tuition for Some Students

Marist University in upstate New York has launched the Empire State Promise, which will cap the cost of a Marist education—including tuition, room and board—at $32,000 per year for certain families, a price administrators say is competitive with the state’s top public university costs. Stony Brook University, one of two State University of New York system flagships, lists the cost of housing, dining, tuition, and fees at $30,671; the other flagship, the University at Buffalo, costs $29,642.

New Yorkers whose families make under $200,000 a year will be eligible for the program.

“The Empire State Promise expands access to an exceptional private university and sends a powerful message to talented students across New York: choose a college based on where you see opportunity, discover your best fit, and can envision your future, not by assumptions about what a private education may cost,” said Sean Kaylor, vice president of enrollment management, in the university’s announcement.

With the initiative, Marist joins a group of private institutions that promise to match public in-state tuition prices.
