Syracuse Says Budget Deficit “Far From a Crisis”

After a Wall Street Journal article highlighting the enrollment and financial woes at Syracuse University, Chancellor J. Michael Haynie told the campus community that the university’s “annual 1.5 percent operating deficit is far from a crisis” and that “demand for a Syracuse education has never been our problem.”

The article, “Why Syracuse Can’t Attract the Students It Needs to Pay the Bills,” delved into the university’s recent drop in enrollment, program cuts and other shifts, arguing that financial challenges that have affected smaller institutions are now hitting bigger universities.

“A national brand-name institution with a $2.5 billion endowment and a storied 150-year tradition is suddenly beginning to flail,” it says.

In his Aug. 31 message, Haynie wrote that the budget deficit is “a signal that we must commit to differentiated academic excellence and to our shared responsibility to the students we serve.” He has previously publicly shared details about the university’s fall 2026 enrollment drop and the associated financial challenges.

“This moment is also a reminder that the way we have always done things is no longer adequate or enough,” he added. “Higher education has a long history of moving slowly. We do not have the luxury of that pace right now.”

Haynie didn’t directly reference the Wall Street Journal article, which said the university’s “challenges are both structural and self-inflicted.” Syracuse saw international student enrollment fall after the Trump administration’s crackdown last year, and its men’s basketball and football teams have struggled to compete nationally, the authors wrote, “depriving the university of national exposure.”

Haynie noted a number of new plans to invest in the university’s future, including a center geared toward students who want to become influencers and efforts to capitalize on a new semiconductor manufacturing complex opening in the area.

“These investments don’t reflect a university playing defense,” he wrote. “Syracuse University is one of America’s great academic institutions and has a long history of being entrepreneurial. That is how we are approaching this moment. We will author our own future, rather than let others write it for us.”
