Cats are often considered beloved family companions, but their independent nature can sometimes create disputes between neighbours. One common issue includes neighbours feeding a cat that doesn’t belong to them.

While the neighbour may believe they are helping the animal, owners have the right to feel that their relationship with the animal, as well as their responsibilities for its care, are being undermined. Purely Pets Insurance has shared how to go around the issue, sharing the consequences if you’re feeding a cat that isn’t yours, or suspect your neighbour is feeding your pet. They said: “In the UK, more than one in three cats are overweight or obese.

Feeding a cat the wrong foods

“Extra weight comes with a higher risk of health conditions such as heart problems, diabetes, cystitis, arthritis, liver disease, breathing problems and cancer, all of which can reduce a cat’s lifespan as well as cause pain and discomfort.”

Even a small imbalance in your cat’s diet can, over time, lead to a life-threatening weight problem. If a neighbour starts feeding your animal unsuitable food, there could be problems beyond weight gain, according to the experts.

They said: “For example, feeding a cat raw meat could expose them to diseases and toxoplasmosis, which has serious consequences for humans, particularly during pregnancy.

“If your cat usually has a special diet to control a health problem, a neighbour could be giving food that could aggravate the problem.” Additionally, if a cat is fed elsewhere, they could eventually stop coming home altogether.

What should you do about a neighbour feeding your cat?

Talk about the issue

The experts said: “Your neighbours might not have worked out that the hungry cat who visits them is actually your much-loved pet. Often, people mistake a pet for a stray that is in genuine need of food.

“If you don’t know your neighbours, knock on the door and introduce yourself, show a picture of your cat and say your pet has a habit of nagging for food, but should not be fed as he or she gets plenty of food at home and does not need any treats or top-ups elsewhere.

“It’s best to avoid a confrontational style, at least to begin with, don’t ask your neighbours if they have been feeding your cat as it could be taken the wrong way and cause tension. Resolving the situation without falling out is always the best option.”

If you’re not quite sure which neighbour is feeding your cat, some posters could help. Make them and put them up in your local area to say that your animal is not a stray. You could also post messages on local Facebook groups in case someone thinks your cat is lost or a stray.

You can add a collar to your cat saying “do not feed me”, or even buy a permanent collar or tag saying the same.

The experts noted: “You could add a sentence saying that the cat has a caring owner and does not need additional food. This is a really good option if you suspect someone is feeding your cat, but you’re not sure who.”

If a gentle cat or a few posters do not do the trick, you might need to think of other options, such as writing a more formal request.

Taking legal action

The experts explained: “Legal action is unlikely to prove successful, and you should think very carefully before going down this route. The police usually see issues involving pets as civil matters and do not wish to be involved.

“In the eyes of the law, a cat is an item of property that can be harmed or stolen in the same way as any other item of property.

“You could seek to take a neighbour to court to claim back additional vet costs if it could be shown these were caused by the neighbour feeding your cat, or if the neighbour was keeping your cat at their property for long periods.”

However, pursuing a court claim or hiring a lawyer can be expensive, so it’s important to try to resolve the issue first.

A letter from a solicitor threatening legal action could be a great approach, according to the pros, but just be careful not to spend more money than you can afford.

How to tell if your neighbour is feeding your cat

There are several telltale signs that your cat is being fed elsewhere. The first is your feline putting on weight.

If you’re sure the food you provide is the right amount, but they continue to put on weight, that is a sure sign someone else is feeding them.

The experts added: “You should also watch out for your cat hanging around the door of a neighbouring house, especially if they are meowing for food. Cats know how to communicate their desires, and once they have been fed by a neighbour, they will likely go back and ask for more.

“You could also watch out for your cat’s eating patterns changing. For example, they might start to eat at different times or eat less of the food you provide, without losing weight.”
