Spider-Man Brand New Day has finally launched in cinemas today. And after months of speculation, we finally know who Sadie Sink’s Marvel villain is.

As was heavily rumoured prior to the new MCU film’s release, the Stranger Things star is playing Jean Grey, as previously played on the big screen by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. The X-Men mutant with telephatic powers is more of a victim than an actual baddie in the new Spidey movie and foreshadows big things to come for the MCU.

At the end of Spider-Man Brand New Day, Jean is depicted taking a bus into the countryside. This would imply she’s probably headed to the yet-to-be-revealed X-Mansion in upstate New York, if it exists yet in the MCU. The only other mutant revealed in Earth-616 so far is Ms Marvel, while variants of Deadpool, Wolverine, Beast and Professor X have featured in MCU movies from different universes. On top of that, the original 2000s X-Men cast is returning from another reality in Avengers Doomsday. If that wasn’t enough, Earth-616 are set to get its very own mutant team in the upcoming X-Men movie.

There are only two movies left in Phase 6 of the Multiverse Saga: Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars. And we’d be surprised if Jean doesn’t show up in the latter. After that, Phase 7 will kick off the Mutant Saga, a reset of the franchise back into one universe, with a focus on the Earth-616 incarnations of the X-Men. Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is helming the new X-Men movie with Joanna Calo and Lee Sung Jin writing the script. Meanwhile, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has confirmed it will be “a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie”. A release date and official title, including the cast, are TBC.
