H&M, Morrisons, Decathlon and more announce closures

The decline of the British high street over the last few years has meant that many stores have been forced to shut certain branches, or go under completely. And it’s sadly not showing any signs of slowing down, with several companies announcing closures over the past week or so.

The rising cost of living means that people are less keen to part with their money, as well as things like overhead costs and reduced footfall all contributing to the decline. Fashion, sports and charity shops have all been hit recently, with closures already happening and set to continue throughout the year. Here’s a roundup of the latest news you might have missed.

British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation has confirmed it will close 150 of its stores across the country. 87 shops have been confirmed for closure and will have their last day of trading in March 2027.

The remaining stores are under review and could be closed by March 2028, according to charity bosses.

Decathlon

This popular sporting goods store has closed a major branch after more than a decade. The Queens Square Decathlon in Crawley was a key part of the high street, and hosted a closing down sale over the last few days to clear out the stock.

“Thank you for being a loyal customer! You can still find us online at http://www.decathlon.co.uk or come see us at our Croydon and Brighton stores,” the notice on the store reads.

Charles Clinkard

The historic shoe brand, founded in 1924, has closed its site on Banbury Road in Summertown, Oxford. It’s not yet known why it has closed down.

Customers in Oxfordshire can still visit the Witney’s Woolgate Shopping Centre and the high street in Burford sites.

Previously, the family-run business has blamed changing shopping habits and other high street challenges on its performance.

Morrisons

Back in May, plans were announced to close down 100 Morrisons Daily stores, and the process has now kicked off.

One store, which was in Woodley, Berkshire, had opened less than two years ago. A second closure has already followed too – Stokesley High St in North Yorkshire closed on July 18 as part of the ongoing reduction plan.

The Stokesley store had operated as a McColl’s for decades before being taken over by Morrison’s in 2022. Despite the 100 closures, Morrisons has announced plans to open 300 more across the country.

H&M

The major fashion chain has confirmed it will be shutting stores worldwide, following the closure of 130 branches.

In just one year, H&M’s brands – which includes Cos, ARKET and Weekday – went from 4,166 stores to 4,036, and according to its latest six-month report for 2026, more closures are expected.

The company revealed that 97 shops across Asia, Oceania and Africa have ceased operations. In Western Europe, 20 stores have closed. A further 17 shut in the Nordics, and four in Eastern Europe.
