Not citric acid or spray – 1 cleaning tip makes shower head look ‘new’

Nobody likes to spend their evenings or weekends cleaning, but sadly it needs to be done. In recent weeks there have been plenty of cleaning hacks, like did you know limescale from your kettle will dissolve with that one household staple you have?

Now limescale pretty much gets everywhere – and it’s frustrating but it can often be tackled with the ingredients you already have sitting in your cupboards.

Limescale is caused by hard water containing dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals. When the water is heated or evaporated, it leaves behind a chalky residue, known as limescale, and often appears on surfaces like taps, pipes and shower heads.

One woman recently revealed how you can banish limescale from your shower head – and it’s so easy you can get it done within a few minutes. Lucy Kalice, a self-proclaimed wannabe domestic goddess, uses her social media to share useful hacks.

In a video shared on TikTok, Lucy told her 117,000 followers there’s nothing “glamorous” about cleaning your bathroom – and that we can agree with.

She said: “I haven’t cleaned this shower head since we moved back in here 5 months ago and it’s got to the point where the water is coming out of that shower head in all different directions, which is always a clear sign it needs a clean.”

Another good giveaway to clean your shower head is when there’s dust at the top too. Speaking about the transformation which “looks so good it’s even better than brand new”, Lucy uses one product mixed with water for the trick.

The cleaning goddess added: “So the only thing that I used to clean the shower head was a mixture of white vinegar and water.

“I let it sit for about 10 minutes while I cleaned this, white vinegar is really good for cleaning limescale which this shower head had lots of.”

In the video, you can see her shower head is gleaming once again and sparkling as though it’s brand new. While in the comments section, people were equally amazed as one said: “Wow so shiny.”

Another added: “Ok this is my sign to do mine! P.S. I love the bronze.”

Why White Vinegar Works on Stubborn Limescale

Vinegar is your best friend when it comes to tackling limescale. As it contains acetic acid, which breaks down and dissolves alkaline calcium carbonate mineral deposits safely, it is a cheap method to clean instead of any harsh chemicals.

It’s naturally acidic and gentle on most metal fixtures which means it won’t damage your appliances along the way. Vinegar also triggers a chemical reaction to soften and dissolve hard water crust.

To make vinegar work effectively on your shower head, you can leave it to soak for a moment, in Lucy’s case she did it in 10 minutes. You’ll need to fill a sturdy plastic bag with the liquid and then submerege the shower head in it.

Make sure the bag is tightly secured to the shower arm. Then leave it to sit before removing and wiping it away.

How to Descale Bathroom Surfaces and Kettles Easily

For most surfaces, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water. Spray and soak the affected area, then leave it for 30 to 60 minutes. Next, scrub with an old toothbrush before rinsing and there you have it.

If you’re descaling a kettle, fill it with half white vinegar and water. Let it sit for one hour, then boil. Allow it to cool and then pour out the solution. Ensure you rinse it thoroughly after. Alternatively, citric acid works great for your kettle too.
