Call of Duty fans have been handed a huge update about the iconic shooter series’ adaptation into a movie. The film, which is due for release in 2028, will be created in partnership with game developers Activision and entertainment giant Paramount.

Initially announced back in 2025, the movie’s director has now revealed some huge details. Peter Berg, the man behind the camera for action films like Hancock and Deepwater Horizon, opened up during a panel at Fanatics Fest in New York on Saturday (July 18). Berg is co-writing the movie with Taylor Sheridan, best known as the co-creator of series Yellowstone and Landman, and dropped some tantalising hints about the film.

One of the key pieces of info that Berg dropped was the setting, as he confirmed it will be set in the Modern Warfare universe. But that wasn’t all that he had to say.

During the fan panel, he hinted that the heroes of Task Force 141 will feature in the movie, as he name-dropped protganists Captain Price Soap, Gaz, Alex and Ghost. Berg also teased information about the film’s main villain.

He said: “You might see a little Laswell, you might see a little Shepherd, and I think a whole lot of new surprises. Maybe a new Makarov. Maybe somebody a little meaner than Makarov.

“But we’re so excited, you know, the enthusiasm that these guys have for the game, and I know you do.”

In a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, by Kareem Soued, an independent tech and gaming journalist, Berg could be seen adding: “We’re so excited, you know, the enthusiasm that these guys have for the game, and I know you do, Sheridan and I both have.

“We have so much respect for the incredible work, the stories, as a filmmaker, the stories that these guys have created are so good. The characters are so good. And we are thrilled to be part of the team.”

When the film was announced back in 2025, Paramount CEO David Ellison promised “a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand.”

The Call of Duty movie is scheduled for release on June 30, 2028.
