Iconic boxing movie Rocky is getting a new lease of life after a new trailer dropped, dramatising Hollywood legend and writer Sylvester Stallone’s (played by Anthony Ippolito) battle to bring his underdog story to the silver screen. The upcoming biographical film I Play Rocky depicts struggling actor Stallone as he keeps failing to land auditions, before he’s encouraged by his girlfriend to write a script that puts him at the heart of the story.

Within three days, Stallone writes the screenplay for Rocky and is instantly picked up by a studio; however, they want “an actor” to take on the lead. After a battle and various offers to buy the script, Stallone is finally cast in Rocky as the lead. But the studio has one big caveat: if the production falls behind by even a day, Stallone is out and another actor will be brought in to lead.

So, begins a journey for Stallone both on and off the camera in this meta-underdog story and succeeding against the odds.

Amazon MGM Studios only dropped the trailer for I Play Rocky yesterday (July 15), but the teaser has already racked up 5.5million views on YouTube and counting.

Many rushed to the comments section under the trailer to share their thoughts as there was an overwhelmingly positive response.

One person posted: “When a movie’s so iconic we’re getting a movie about making that movie.”

A second wrote: “I mean the story behind it is just as inspirational. Plus it has the added benefit of being true.”

Others praised actor Ippolito for this portrayal as the Rambo icon: “Bro is impersonating Stallone with such perfection.”

A second said: “The Apollo chuckle & smile at the end was spot on.”

A third noted: “Dude even looks like a younger Stallone” and a fourth person commented: “This guy’s going to be a star. What an incredible spot on impression of Sly Stallone. Got the voice down perfectly.”

This isn’t actor Ippolito’s first time portraying another screen icon, he previously played Al Pacino in The Offer, which depicted the chaotic behind-the-scenes story of how The Godfather was brought to screens.

New York-born star Ippolito has also appeared in Purple Hearts, Fool’s Day, Pixels, What Would You Do?, and The English Teacher.

I Play Rocky will be coming out in the autumn and marks 50 years since the 1976 movie first arrived in cinemas.

The movie also stars AnnaSophia Robb, Toby Kebbell, P.J Byrne, Stephan James, Jay Duplass, Robert Morgan, Tracy Letts, and Matt Dillon.

The original Rocky movie won four of the 10 Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Picture and has become part of pop culture history.

Rocky led to four more sequel movies and more recently the Creed spin-off movies starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).

I Play Rocky will be released in cinemas in November
