ICE Detains HBCU Baseball MVP

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Friday detained Johan Sandoval, an international student athlete at Savannah State University in Georgia, in Clifton Park, N.Y., The Daily Gazette reported.

Sandoval came to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2021 to earn a college degree and play baseball, according to his family’s GoFundMe asking for donations to help bring him home to Clifton Park. It says he was detained after issues arose concerning his F-1 student status. 

“We are working diligently with Savannah State University, immigration professionals and legal counsel to resolve his case and pursue every available legal avenue so that he can continue his education,” the GoFundMe page reads.

Before he was detained, Sandoval was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 HBCU Baseball All-Star Game last month.
