Primark customers can walk away with a free item in their shopping bags simply by asking for it at the checkout. Primark stands as one of Britain’s most popular retail chains, with an estimated 2.3 million people visiting the high street specifically to browse Primark outlets every week across the UK.

The chain is renowned nationwide for providing an extensive selection of clothing under one roof at budget-friendly prices, stocking fashionable apparel, beauty items and homeware at accessible price points.

While numerous loyal Primark enthusiasts may believe they’re familiar with every aspect of the store, there’s one lesser-known benefit that might have escaped their attention. Many shoppers already flock to Primark hunting for bargains, and they can capitalise on an extra cost-saving opportunity at the till simply by making their request known.

Customers can request free coat hangers from staff at the checkout by asking the question. When approached for a statement, a Primark spokesperson verified that shoppers can take additional hangers home without charge following their purchase, reports the Liverpool Echo.

“Customers are welcome to ask for additional hangers when purchasing an item in store, and where possible, our store teams will include the additional hangers free of charge in the transaction”, they said. “We’d encourage shoppers to ask one of our colleagues if it’s something they’d like.”

Shoppers can request standard clothes hangers, trouser hangers, or single-peg clips, commonly used for shorts. The availability of such items will vary depending on what a particular branch happens to have in stock behind the counter on any given day.

As numerous retailers face disposal costs for excess plastic hangers, staff are generally more than willing to pass them along to customers rather than send them to landfill. Employees will frequently hand over spare hangers or fill a bag if they have a surplus building up; however, it is worth checking the store’s policy beforehand or having a word with a member of staff to be certain.

Elsewhere on the high street, charity shops are regularly overwhelmed with donated hangers and are perfectly happy to give away boxes of them at no cost whatsoever. Local dry cleaners tend to accumulate hundreds of wire and safety hangers each week and are typically delighted for someone to take a bundle off their hands.

Across the globe, approximately 34 billion plastic clothes hangers are discarded into landfill sites every year. As they tend to snap easily and are commonly manufactured from a mixture of low-grade materials, nearly 85% of all hangers produced end up being thrown away rather than recycled.

The top eco-conscious alternatives to traditional plastic hangers comprise bamboo, recycled cardboard, bioplastics, and sustainably certified wood. By choosing these materials, you can significantly reduce plastic waste and help decrease the amount of rubbish destined for landfill sites.

Surplus hangers are ideal for repurposing throughout your home. They can be transformed into DIY organisers for accessories, fashioned into compact drying racks for delicate garments, or even crafted into supports for your garden plants. They can also make washing day considerably more straightforward.
