Best alternatives to Princess Kate’s sold-out hiking jacket
Over the weekend, it was revealed that the Princess of Wales completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge. Kate conquered Ben Nevis (Scotland’s tallest peak), Scafell Pike (England’s highest point), and Snowdon (Wales’s loftiest summit) all within a 24-hour window, raising vital funds for the hospital that treated her.
While the 24-hour challenge is inherently formidable, tackling it amidst unpredictable British weather – which swung between scorching sunshine and torrential downpours – makes the achievement all the more impressive. For the expedition, Kate opted for House of Bruar’s Ladies Härkila Sandheim Pro Insulated Cardigan (£229.99), a tactical choice given the volatile climate.
Offering more warmth than a standard sweater without the restrictive bulk of a traditional hiking coat, this khaki zip-up is the ultimate hybrid companion for unpredictable summer treks. As happens with most items Kate is spotted wearing, the garment has quickly sold out, with just a couple of sizes still in stock.
However, for anyone planning their own outdoor escape and wanting to replicate her versatile, high-altitude style, there are excellent alternatives still available. Barbour’s Women’s Hybrid Jacket (£105, was £129) claims our number one position, showing a remarkable similarity to the Princess’s selection, though in a lighter shade, reports OK!.
With its quilted front section featuring contrasting fabric panels, an adjustable hood for windy weather and handy side pockets, it represents an exceptionally adaptable choice at half the price of Kate’s jacket.
For a lightweight alternative, Regatta’s Andreson Hybrid Water-Repellent Jacket is a great pick. In a soft cream shade, it pairs a water-repellent finish with strategically placed insulation for comfortable warmth without the bulk. Better still, it’s now just £30 (down from £60). The cream version is available in sizes 8–20, while blue, pink and navy offer more colour options.
Another standout is the Trespass Wando Hybrid Jacket (£35.99, was £104.99), a close match to the Princess’s practical khaki style. It features an insulated core, hood and cosy sherpa-lined sleeves for extra warmth when the temperature drops.
While all three jackets offer a similar hybrid design to Kate’s sold-out favourite at a fraction of the price, none have been reviewed by shoppers yet, making it difficult to gauge how they perform in real-world conditions. However, the Regatta and Barbour coats’ lighter cream colour may be less practical for muddy walks.
