Stephen King’s The Shawshank Redemption is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. But did you know another of his prison novels was adapted just a few years later by the same writer-director, Frank Darabont?

1999’s The Green Mile is a modern masterpiece set on death row in the American South during the Great Depression. Tom Hanks stars as a corrections officer who oversees “the green mile” and the electric chair executions that take place in the room next door.

The four-time Oscar-nominated film focuses on the late Michael Clarke Duncan’s breakout role as John Coffey, who has been sentenced to death for murdering two white girls. Over time, it becomes clear that John may be innocent and has Jesus-like miraculous healing powers.

The Green Mile is streaming on Netflix UK and the last day to watch the over 3 hour movie is on July 18.
