On Monday afternoon, police said that an “armed and dangerous” person was in the Montreal neighborhood and advised the public to avoid the area near Côte-des-Neiges, Highway 40, and Queen Mary. Those who were in the area were advised to shelter in place.
Police did not clarify where exactly the shooting took place.
Video from the scene circulating online showed officers responding to the scene with their guns drawn. Gunshots could also be heard ringing out. Another video showed someone who appears to be the suspect carrying a rifle and an injured police officer.
Police announced that a suspect had been neutralized and two officers and a citizen were injured. Police later said that an officer died.
A civilian was also killed in the shooting, according to Elizabeth Prass, a Member of Parliament for the district of D’Arcy-McGee.
“It is shocking to know that something like this can happen here in Côte-des-Neiges, but we must remain vigilant and follow police instructions while their operation is ongoing,” Prass said in a statement on X.
During a news briefing Monday afternoon, police said they are still searching for other victims. A bystander was slightly injured and a long gun was seized from the scene, according to police.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
