‘Masterpiece’ World War 2 drama that ‘makes Saving Private Ryan look like a comedy’ | Films | Entertainment
There have been countless World War 2 films released over the years. Many viewers will already be familiar with movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk and Schindler’s List. But there is another film released more than 40 years ago that is still regularly recommended by cinema fans.
It continues to receive glowing reviews from viewers and has built up a reputation as one of the genre’s very best. The movie has also earned impressive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently holds a 90% critics’ score and a 95% audience score.
The film is Come and See, a Soviet World War 2 drama released in 1985. It was directed by Elem Klimov and stars Aleksei Kravchenko and Olga Mironova.
The story is set in Belarus during World War 2 and follows a young boy living through the German occupation.
The film was based on real events and drew inspiration from survivor testimonies and the novel Khatyn by Ales Adamovich.
Although it was released more than four decades ago, many viewers still believe it is one of the greatest war films ever made.
One person said in a review on Rotten Tomatoes: “BY FAR the best most horrific depiction of war I have ever seen. It makes Saving Private Ryan look like a comedy. Absolutely amazing depiction of what war really is and should be a mandatory watch for students in high school.”
Another added: “I was SPEECHLESS! Greatest war movie ever made.”
A third wrote: “Elem Klimov’s brutal masterpiece is definitely the most devastating, disturbing, terrifying and personal one of my favorite war film of all time.
“It almost feels like you’re watching a horror movie. Showing the true, cruel reality of war from a civilian perspective.”
Someone else commented: “This is a heart-wrenching film and might be my favourite war film.”
The movie received positive reviews when it first arrived in cinemas in 1985. It later won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival.
Over the years, it has appeared on numerous lists ranking the greatest films ever made.
In 2022, it was ranked among the top films of all time in the prestigious Sight & Sound poll. The film is also frequently mentioned in discussions about the best anti-war movies ever released.
Come and See is available to stream on Apple TV.
