Not spray or glass cleaner – cupboard staple will make windows sparkle

Using glass cleaner is not the answer (Stock Image) (Image: Getty)
If your windows are in desperate need of a deep clean, but you haven’t gotten around to it in quite some time, this cupboard staple will have them looking as good as new in no time at all.
Let’s be honest, the goal is streak-free glass with minimal effort without spending extra, unnecessary money on products that don’t actually work properly and can make the windows look even worse than when you started.
Lily, who shares her top cleaning tips on her social media channels, explained all you actually need to make windows shine is washing up liquid, which she prefers Fairy, and water in a bucket.
She used a microfibre towel as well to ensure the glass was “streak-free,” as she thoroughly cleaned the windows. She said it’s important to dry them off “with a glass cloth” for best results.
Then she used a brush to get into all the nooks and crannies when she opened the windows, then ensured everything was as clean as possible as part of her home reset.
It’s important you get rid of any dust which may be on windows before cleaning them properly, as otherwise, you might just be rubbing dust around.
Focus on spots like fingerprints, bird droppings, or grime. For exterior windows, work in sections so the solution doesn’t dry and leave marks, making it look worse than when you first started.
She went up and down over the window with the solution, rather than doing it in circular motions, as if you replicate what a squeegee would do, it’ll look loads better in the long run.
Fairy washing up liquid is highly effective for cleaning windows because its concentrated surfactant formula quickly cuts through grease, fingerprints, and grime. It also provides excellent “slip”, allowing a window squeegee to glide smoothly across the glass without dragging or squeaking, resulting in a flawless, streak-free shine.
In the comments, someone wrote: “I’ve only just started using Fairy washing-up liquid to clean my windows. Previously, I used glass cleaner and was left with streaks. No more streaks for me!”
Lily said again it was “amazing,” and if you don’t have any in your cupboard right now, you can easily pick it up for just 89p at Savers.
Another person recommended cleaning all the tricky bits in the windows with “a paintbrush” and said that’s how they manage to keep them sparkling all year round.
“Yeah, I use them too,” Lily explained, but trial and error is the best way to see what works for you.
Someone else praised the hack and said they “loved it” because it really works.
