Watch Olivia Rodrigo Showcase ‘The Cure’ on ‘Kimmel’
Jimmy Kimmel also offered the singer an opportunity to fulfill her long-held dream of being a babysitter
Olivia Rodrigo stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform her evocative single, “The Cure,” and to chat with Jimmy Kimmel about her forthcoming LP, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
The singer, clad in a white gown, showcased the emotionally-wrought number alongside her live band while surrounded by a pile of red microphone cords. “My head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt/ I got toxins in my bloodstream and you tried hard to suck ’em out,” she sings on the track. “And it feels like medication, and it’s good for me, I’m sure/But it don’t matter how your love feels anymore.”
Rodrigo has so far shared a few songs from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, out June 12 via Geffen Records. In April she released “Drop Dead,” the LP’s first single,” followed by “The Cure” last month. She recently showcased her collaboration with Robert Smith, “What’s Wrong With Me?,” live at Primavera.
The singer joined Kimmel to discuss making the album, shooting her “Drop Dead” music video at the Palace of Versailles, and choosing the title. “The record is about being in love, but in sort of a nuanced way,” she told Kimmel of the album’s name. “It definitely has its highs and lows. I thought that the title really captured that.”
Rodrigo also explained how she became a fan of the Cure and Smith. “I feel like everyone is a fan of the Cure,” Rodrigo said. “I just think they’re the best band ever. I think I was probably introduced to them through my parents. My dad is a huge Cure fan. We saw the Cure perform at Primavera the other day and he said that was his 30th time seeing the Cure. He’s a diehard, super fan.”
Later during the interview, Kimmel offered Rodrigo an opportunity to do something she never got the chance to do because she became so successful at a young age: babysit. In a pre-taped segment, titled “Dreams Come True,” Kimmel put Rodrigo in a dressing room with 10 children belonging to his staff, a chaotically hilarious experience.
