Actors left ‘broken’ after filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey | Films | Entertainment
One of the year’s most highly anticipated films is nearly upon us. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is an upcoming fantasy action film adapted from Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey.
The film’s stacked cast includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, and his wife, Penelope, portrayed by Anne Hathaway.
The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan, alongside his wife Emma Thomas, is producing the film through their production company, Syncopy.
The film’s synopsis reads: “The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, on his long and perilous journey home following the Trojan War, chronicling his encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, sirens, and the nymph Calypso, while attempting to reunite with his wife, Penelope.”
In the lead-up to the film’s release, Pattinson revealed himself and the other actors were left “broken” after filming. In an interview with GQ, the actor talked about the day he arrived on set.
He said: “I was sitting in the hotel bar by myself and then people started drifting in, and I’ve never seen people look so exhausted. And this was only a third of the way. I started a third of the way through the movie, and they’d already been to [two] countries by that point, and people just looked like…. I mean, at the end of every day people were broken.”
Overall, The Odyssey was filmed in six countries over 91 days. Locations included Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States.
Holland also spoke about the vastness of filming; he said: “I remember walking down this beach for half an hour, and I’m just seeing Greek soldier, Greek soldier, Greek boat, Greek soldier, the Trojan wars, Greek boat, Greek soldier for…. I don’t know if I’m exaggerating, but it felt like miles.
“And I’m saying to the PA: ‘Where is the crew? I haven’t seen any evidence of a film set. This is more reminiscent of a reenactment than it is a film set.’ “
The Odyssey film will hit UK cinemas on July 17.
