A British Gas engineer has shared how households can ‘lower their energy bills’ through a simple maintenance step. The cost-cutting advice was posted in a video on the firm’s official YouTube channel.

In the footage, British Gas engineer Jay said that arranging an annual boiler service could help people reduce their energy costs. He also detailed how regular servicing ensures your boiler operates efficiently. In the video, Jay outlined three key reasons he urges customers to book the check.

Jay said: “Part of the job is fixing boilers when they break, but what I really prefer is stopping that from happening in the first place, and that’s what an annual service is all about.

“Your boiler has been working hard all year, every cold morning, every hot shower, every cosy night in. Now it’s getting warmer, why not show it some TLC with an annual service? Here are my top three reasons for booking a boiler service.”

Starting his list, Jay explained that getting a service could “lower your energy bills.” The expert said: “It keeps everything running safely and efficiently. A well-serviced boiler doesn’t have to work as hard to heat your home, which means it uses less energy, keeping your bills down.”

He added: “Number two, it means you’re much less likely to have a breakdown later in the year. Nobody wants to be standing in a cold kitchen in December, waiting for a lovely engineer, like myself, to come and save the day.”

Lastly, Jay reminded customers that an annual service could be important for their warranty. “Not everyone thinks of this one. If your boiler is still in warranty, you need an annual service to keep it valid,” he said. “So give it the attention it needs.”

In the caption, British Gas wrote: “In this video, Jay, a British Gas engineer, shares his top three reasons to book an annual boiler service; from keeping your boiler running safely and efficiently, to avoiding unexpected breakdowns and protecting your warranty.

“With your boiler working hard all year round, now’s the perfect time to get ahead and give it the care it needs before winter. Book now and you can get a boiler service for £69 with free British Gas Membership, helping keep your home running smoothly for less.”

Worcester Bosch, a domestic boiler provider, also suggests getting your boiler serviced in spring or summer. Guidance on the website says: “Firstly, engineers are far less busy in the warmer months because there are far fewer breakdowns. With people using their boilers less, it means you can get an appointment easier and any spares/repairs are likely to be easier to sort out.

“Secondly, you get ahead of the game for when it is time to turn your heating on. Trying to get an appointment at the beginning of winter, when everybody else is doing the same, can mean that you’re a little colder than usual, for a little longer than normal.”

Worcester Bosch said that a service typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, with prices often ranging from £50 to £100 depending on where you live and the type of boiler you have.
