Need to know: UK set for first smoke-free generation with new tobacco and vapes bill
- The UK’s Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 received Royal Assent, officially becoming law. The legislation, effective from January 2027, applies across all four nations of the UK – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – and prohibits the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009.
- This groundbreaking move aims to prevent future generations from the harms of smoking. The habit causes about 80,000 deaths each year in the UK.
