There’s nothing worse than putting on your brand new white top to go out for a meal, only to realise that you’ve spilt sauce all down it. It makes your heart sink, and because you’re out and about, you can’t immediately start working on the stain, so things can get stressful. Or maybe you’ve got make-up all over your fresh white towels.

But fear not, Lynsey Queen of Clean shares that there’s something you may have lying around in your home that could work an absolute treat on these stains on white garments.

She did say that it was an “unexpected hero,” and not every household will have it, but if you do, then you’re certainly in luck. It’s not the only item to be considered a “miracle” when it comes to cleaning either.

Lynsey called it a “little cleaning tablet that works like magic,” so if you’ve got dentures, you’ll certainly want to listen up.

Lynsey explained: “Denture tablets are brilliant little multitaskers and so handy to have in your cleaning cupboard. Not only are they great for their intended use, but they can also work wonders around the home”.

The Little Cleaning Tablet That Works Like Magic ?????? Denture tablets are brilliant little multitaskers and so handy to have in your cleaning cupboard. Not only are they great for their intended use, but they can also work wonders around the home. I recently used them to tackle stains on this T-shirt makeup, mud and even fake tan and after a quick soak they lifted the stains with ease. She continued: “I recently used them to tackle stains on this T-shirt, makeup, mud and even fake tan, and after a quick soak, they lifted the stains with ease.

“Such a simple, affordable little trick and definitely one I always keep stocked in the laundry cupboard”.

This means that you won’t have to spend a fortune on replacing your whites, and she showed off the results, and they were phenomenal.

In the comments, someone queried “how long do you need to leave it for?” and Lynsey responded: “As long as you need, keep checking the stain. For bad ones, leave a good few hours”. Another asked whether you needed to use cold or warm water, and Lynsey said that warm water works best.

Why do they work, though?

Denture tablets can help get stains out of white clothes because they contain a blend of cleaning ingredients designed to lift and break down stubborn deposits, and those same processes can work on common fabric stains.

Many tablets contain an oxygen-based bleach, often sodium percarbonate. When it dissolves in water, it releases oxygen, which helps oxidise and loosen coloured stain compounds such as tea, coffee, wine and some food marks, and it can also brighten general dinginess in white fabric.

They also usually include ingredients that create an effervescent fizz (typically an acid and a carbonate). That bubbling adds a mild mechanical agitation and helps the solution penetrate into the weave of the fabric, which can make it easier for stains and residue to lift out.

Tablets often contain alkaline salts like bicarbonate or carbonate that shift the water’s pH in a way that helps loosen general grime and some oily soils.

Some brands also include small amounts of surfactants, which act a bit like detergent to help disperse oils and dirt into the water, and chelating agents that bind minerals in hard water so the cleaning ingredients work more effectively and don’t leave fabrics looking dull. A few formulations include enzymes, which can help with protein-based stains, though that varies by brand.

They’re often suggested for whites specifically because oxygen bleach is aimed at whitening and brightening, and is generally less harsh than chlorine bleach, while still being effective on many types of discolouration that show up clearly on white clothing.

There are limits and cautions. Denture tablets tend to be less effective on heavy grease, dye transfer (colour run), some inks, and certain stains like rust, where specialist treatments work better.

They’re also not ideal for delicate fabrics like wool or silk, or for garments with sensitive dyes or prints, so a patch test is sensible. It’s also important not to combine them with chlorine bleach or other strong cleaners.
