Apex on Netflix filming locations unveiled | Films | Entertainment

Netflix’s reigning number one film is a gripping cat-and-mouse thriller that pits a daring rock climber against a deranged hunter.

Starring Charlize Theron as Sasha and Taron Egerton as her relentless pursuer, Ben, this edge-of-your-seat adventure has clearly struck a chord with subscribers.

Helmed by director Baltasar Kormákur, Apex unfolds across the Australian wilderness, which confronts Sasha with a series of treacherous obstacles as she desperately attempts to escape her most deadly threat.

Where was Apex filmed?

The new Netflix film was indeed shot entirely in Australia, with production in Sydney and New South Wales taking place during spring last year.

Lending a raw authenticity to the film, much of the action is set within the Blue Mountains World Heritage-listed National Park, situated a 90-minute drive from Sydney.

One particularly spectacular location is the Grand Canyon walking track, which offers a breathtaking vista of the verdant, mountainous scenery.

Further key locations include the historic town of Bowning, near the Murray River, a small hamlet with a population of less than 1,000, which is where Sasha first bumps into Ben.

Later in the film, Sasha narrowly avoids being caught by Ben while paddling down a river. These scenes were captured at the secluded wild swimming spot known as The Needles. Viewers may also recognise the Ginninderra Falls near the border of Australian Capital Territory (ACT), where Sasha performs a breathtaking cliff jump.

Regarded as one of Australia’s most spectacular waterfalls, it plunges more than 60km into a deep gorge. Sadly, the site is currently closed to the public, though it was once a hugely popular tourist destination.

Director Kormákur has revealed that filming on location in Australia was the only viable option to bring this ambitious thriller to life.

“For a film like Apex – where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it – no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location,” he said.

“The unrivalled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production.

“I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW government, and the Australian Government’s Location Offset for all the support we’ve received in making this journey possible.”
