American in the UK reveals 4 things have changed her life

An American woman who now lives in the UK has celebrated the fourth anniversary of her relocation by highlighting four major differences between the USA and her adopted home. Ashley Jackson moved from Austin, Texas, to Stretford in Greater Manchester in April 2022 together with her husband Andi, who originates from Preston, Lancashire, and their children Levon and Matilda, and regularly shares her experiences of life in her new home on social media.

To commemorate the fourth anniversary of the momentous move earlier this week, Ashley revealed the four most striking differences she had observed about her new home. Posting on Instagram, she wrote: “Four years ago today we moved to England from Texas with 10 suitcases, two kids, two prams, two car seats, and two dogs (soon to be on their way). Here’s what stood out the most in my time here.”

Regarding her first observation, she said: “How the smallest habits (drinking tea, biscuits, wearing cozy slippers) can make all the difference in day-to-day life. Especially in those colder months!”

Her second point touches on something that frequently puzzles foreigners — our distinctly British sense of humour. Ashley said: “How humour and banter are the driving force to building rapport and navigating social situations here.”

Naturally, if there is one subject we Brits love talking about, it’s the weather, and this has certainly not gone unnoticed by Ashley. She wrote: “How the seasons can help define your life. Not just what you wear, what you do and when, but also your mindset.” Finally, Ashley said: “Community is built into day-to-day life. The infrastructure here allows for tighter communities and I’m here for it.”

She concluded: “Bonus! Life is really what you make of it no matter where you are in the world.”
