People have been left baffled after only just discovering the ‘correct’ way of grating cheese, as one simple adjustment helps you grate it faster and with considerably less mess.
After spending a long day at work or school, the last thing you want is to spend hours cooking up an elaborate meal for dinner. However, there are several ways you can make the home cooking process easier and less of a faff. Cooking at home is great as you can add in all the flavours you want and feel a sense of accomplishment once the meal is on the table. And not to mention, it often ends up far healthier than ordering a takeaway.
But cooking a home-cooked meal doesn’t mean you have to transform into a gourmet chef to pull it off. In fact, the internet is packed with clever cooking hacks that make different aspects of preparing a meal considerably easier and save you time in the long run.
A woman and mother of two named Tayla is one of the many people who have shared cooking hacks online, taking to TikTok to demonstrate how to achieve better results when grating cheese, claiming we’ve all been doing it wrong.
“All my life, I’ve been grating my cheese like this,” the text on the video read, as the woman went on to demonstrate her technique.
This involved having the grater standing upright and gripping the handle at the tip. She then proceeded to grate the block of cheese up and down the grater.
However, she went on to reveal that this isn’t the most efficient method, having discovered an alternative approach that makes the task far more effective and considerably less messy.
To demonstrate, she simply placed the grater down flat on its side. Still gripping the handle, she proceeded to grate the cheese across the flat grater, which immediately appeared far more stable and secure, while also enabling her to grate the cheese much more quickly and with minimal mess.
“So much easier and it gathers in the middle of the grater, so it’s easier to transport your cheese,” she explained.
People quickly flocked to the comment section to express their astonishment, with many claiming they were ‘today years old’ when they discovered this handy grating tip.

A third person said: “My life has been a lie. And you always end up grating a finger tip.”
Some also shared their own life hacks for grating cheese more effortlessly, with one sharing: “I grate mine in the food processor, one of the blades does perf grating.
“Meanwhile there’s tubs you can get where the lid is just a grater and you grate it straight into the tub and store it like that…” another person explained.
Someone else also confessed: “And then there’s me, who’s too lazy to grate it and buys grated cheese from Asda.”
