Leading the list, the Australian Cattle Dog is well known for its hardiness. These working dogs possess boundless energy and require an owner who has plenty of time to keep them exercised with regular walks, yet they are not predisposed to disease.

Another working breed renowned for its good health is the Border Collie. Not only are these dogs amongst the most intelligent of all breeds, but their natural drive for work and physical activity means they are far more likely to stay in peak condition as they grow older.

Next up is another Aussie breed — the Australian Shepherd. These striking dogs are celebrated for their gorgeous coats and, as working animals, they are bred to be robust and resilient.

Huskies can be rather high-maintenance — their thick double coats demand regular grooming to keep them in top condition, yet they remain one of the healthiest breeds you can own.

Dr Cahn stated: “Bred for cold climates and tough physical tasks, Huskies have evolved into a naturally strong and hearty breed.”

These distinctive dogs are not only a healthy breed but a quiet one too. Due to the structure of their vocal chords, this working breed physically cannot bark, making them ideal for someone seeking a quieter pet.

These dogs are an ancient breed, celebrated for their exceptional health owing to their strong genetics. Their distinctive fox-like appearance and comparatively small stature make them a hugely popular choice.

Another energetic breed, Beagles were initially bred for hunting purposes, which accounts for them being amongst the healthier breeds. Dr Cahn noted: “As active hunting dogs, Beagles stay fit, contributing to their overall robust health.”

This breed remains a household favourite due to their amiable and affectionate temperament, while also being a comparatively healthy dog.

While they demand a balanced diet and consistent exercise to flourish, they do require upkeep to avoid joint complications which can prove troublesome.

These compact dogs are a well-liked and healthy breed as their stature makes them less susceptible to developing difficulties. Nevertheless, their ears need routine grooming to ward off infections.

Cross-breeds such as Labradoodles often benefit from “hybrid vigour,” the vet clarified, meaning their genetic diversity diminishes the probability of hereditary conditions.
