Every country has its own culinary specialities, and the UK is no different. Whether it’s fish and chips, pie and mash, or, of course, the legendary Sunday roast, there’s a lot to love.

One American man who now lives in the UK has shared the three types of food he had never even heard of before moving here – but now “can’t live without”. The man is known on TikTok as yankeedoodleintheuk, where he describes himself as “celebrating British culture, one mishap at a time”. He recently posted a video captioned: “Three things I didn’t even know existed before I moved here.”

Opening the video, he said: “There’s three things I didn’t even know existed before I moved to the UK. Now, it’s something you probably won’t expect, but I love them and now I just can’t live without them.”

Explaining his first pick, he said he had spotted the tasty item while at his local shop. “I did a little sneaky peekie, a little recce, towards the clearance section, and I found a chocolate trifle,” he said. “Chocolate trifle? Yeah, I love a trifle.

“But before I even moved to the UK, if you asked me what a trifle was, I [would] have no idea. But now I know. I know everything about trifles. I’m a trifle expert.”

The second thing revealed itself after a bit more digging in the clearance section. “I found an apple crumble,” he said.

“When I first visited in 2014 I had my first apple crumble, had that first bite with lashings of custard, I was just – my hair blew back, my hair blew back. I was just ‘oh, this is my favourite pudding’. And ever since then I have to order it at every pub I go to.

“If it’s not that, then the sticky toffee pudding every time. STP baby.”

And the third was suitably seasonal. “Got some hot cross buns,” he said. “So I’m just walking around the Co-op with the trifle, the apple crumble, and the hot cross buns, just living my best life, right?

“Before I moved here I just thought it was a song that we sang in primary school or whatnot. But ever since, I mean, it’s something that you put in the toaster, right, and you take it out, you add some butter to it – oh, belissimo, gorgeous. And now it’s one of my favourite parts of Easter.

Concluding, he said: “These three things are just – oh – they’ve impacted my life so much.”

People had their own suggestions for other puddings he could try in the comments. One said: “Apple crumble is really good, but have you tried rhubarb crumble? Rhubarb is definitely an acquired taste, but I do love it, especially in a crumble with hot custard, delicious.”

Another said: “Try the chocolate trifle with a tin of cherries (or cherry pie filling). It’s like black forest cake… No need to thank me, just enjoy it, because you will.” The man replied: “This is absolute madness and pure genius. I will never forget such a beautiful tip.”

Someone else wrote: “One thing we do well in Britain is puddings. I’m surprised that other countries don’t do hot cross buns. I’d always assumed they were universal Easter fayre… who knew they’re a British thing!”
