‘Excellent’ crime thriller with Yellowstone icon hailed a ‘must watch’ | Films | Entertainment

A Yellowstone icon features in a “brutal” but “excellent” revenge thriller that’s currently streaming.

The picture, which features Yellowstone’s John Dutton actor Kevin Costner, has been characterised as a “modern Western” and boasts an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Initially released in 2020 and helmed by Fargo co-executive producer Thomas Bezucha, the mystery crime drama is now available to stream online.

Netflix subscribers, who also have access to Taylor Sheridan programmes such as Yellowstone, 1883 and 1923, can now witness another “career-defining” performance from Costner.

This arrives two years after Costner formally departed Yellowstone, confirming he would not return for the second half of series 5, which was the final instalment of the programme.

Viewers can now watch Costner in another “gripping” performance as he portrays George Blackledge in Let Him Go, reports The Mirror.

Diane Lane, recognised for her parts in 2002’s Unfaithful and 2003’s Under the Tuscan Sun, also appears as Margaret Blackledge.

The IMDb synopsis for Let Him Go states: “A retired sheriff and his wife, grieving over the death of their son, set out to find their only grandson.”

The drama chronicles the Blackledges as they depart their ranch in Montana to rescue their young grandson from a dangerous family residing in a remote location somewhere in the Dakotas.

Viewers have taken to the comments section of Rotten Tomatoes to express their opinions on the picture, with some describing it as a hidden gem.

One viewer remarked: “Excellent drama. Slow burn but worth the wait. Outstanding cast. The last few minutes of the movie had me on the edge of my seat. Lane and Costner were great as two grandparents desperately trying to save their grandson.”

“This movie was so so good, A must see!” a second declared, while another concurred: “A Gripping and Emotional Must-Watch! Let Him Go, starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, is a deeply moving and powerful film that I absolutely recommend.”

They added: “It’s not just a suspenseful thriller – it’s an emotional journey about love, loss, and the unbreakable bond of family. Costner and Lane deliver breath-taking performances as a couple who embark on a dangerous quest to rescue their grandson from an abusive family.”

However, some viewers found the film overly dark, with one individual stating: “Way too brutal and depressing. Costner and Lane were very good, but story was not well done. Very hard to hear some of the dialogue way too soft.”

A second viewer noted: “Totally not what you’d expect from an actor like Kevin Costner. Movie was slow moving. Even at the end when the story did take a dark turn it was boring. Poor story with a weak ending. Hated this movie.”

Despite this, admirers also praised the acting talent on display, with one gushing: “The acting was superb in this movie and the casting should get an Oscar. I don’t usually watch new films twice in the same month but will make an exception.”

Another viewer agreed: “A Neo-Western revenge drama, that is a little slowly paced, but is still engaging throughout thanks to a superb cast. It’s a dour rescue story that pulls heavy on the heartstrings.”

“A gripping suspenseful thriller with superb acting. You won’t let go until the final credits roll,” another viewer wrote, while one more stated: “Not only one of the year’s best films, it’s one of Kevin Costner’s best films too. It’s a career defining role for Costner.”
