Whether you’re throwing a charcuterie party or simply in need of a quick and easy snack to grab on the go, cream crackers are always a reliable choice. They have a good shelf life (which means you can store them for whenever you need), and they serve as a fantastic addition to any simple cheese board. Jacob’s is the obvious go-to brand for cream crackers, but for £1.58, I wanted to see if any of the supermarket versions taste better.

With a much-needed large glass of water to hand, I taste-tested cream crackers from Jacob’s, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda. I tasted all nine cream crackers on their own and with a little butter spread on top. I was on the lookout for the taste, texture and appearance of each cracker.

Starting with the brand leader, I’ve never actually had Jacob’s cream crackers before. Just from looking at them, they had a perfect golden colour. They had an ok flavour and a classic crunchy texture, but considering these were more than double in price all of the supermarket cream crackers, I was expecting a better aftertaste.

From just looking at these cream crackers, they looked great; however, the texture is where it all went downhill. These crackers lacked the crunch you want from a cream cracker, and they seemed almost stale.

The cream crackers in the Morrisons pack seemed more uniform and golden in colour than the others. At 6p cheaper than Tesco, the Morrisons crackers were far more crunchy and had a pleasant flavour and aftertaste.

These cream crackers also had a great colour to them and had a good crunch, but that’s where the positives end. These were definitely the worst-tasting cream crackers in this selection – they were giving cardboard. Even with the addition of butter, there was no saving the flavour.

The golden colour on the cream crackers was lacking in the M&S ones, but the flavour and texture made up for it. They were light and crispy, just like how they were described on their packaging. The flavour was improved when I spreaded on some butter.

The Lidl cream crackers had a strong crunch; however, they became very claggy in my mouth and were hard to swallow. I needed a lot of water to get this cracker down.

I first noticed that these crackers were not as golden as the majority of the other ones that also came in at the same price. The Sainsbury’s crackers were also slightly smaller than Jacob’s or the supermarket brands. That being said, the taste and texture were lovely, better than Jacob’s.

It was disappointing to see that the Waitrose cream crackers had the worst colour to them, given that they are the second most expensive supermarket brand. In terms of the taste and texture, they were pretty standard and tasted like Jacob’s crackers.

Surprisingly, I found Asda’s cream crackers to be the best. They had a perfect golden colour to them, like Jacob’s, but I preferred the flavour. Unlike Jacob’s, they had a lovely aftertaste, which I didn’t even get from the other cream crackers.

The texture was also fantastic as it had the perfect level of crunchiness without being too dry. Plus, these are one of the cheapest cream crackers on the market, which is less than half the price of Jacob’s. I’d definitely switch to Asda if you’re a cream cracker lover.
