‘Outstanding’ Spielberg miniseries starring Morgan Freeman now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment
A new series by Steven Spielberg starring Morgan Freeman has arrived on Netflix. The Dinosaurs is an American television nature documentary miniseries produced by Amblin Documentaries and Silverback Films.
Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and narrated by Morgan Freeman, the four-part series explores the history of “nature’s greatest empire”, dinosaurs, from their appearance in the Triassic period to their demise in the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. A spiritual successor to Life on Our Planet, the series was released on Netflix on March 6, 2026. It has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score based on six reviews. Reviewers said it was “viscerally, vividly real”, with “outstanding” visuals and sound design. Another said that “anyone interested in the latest scientific knowledge on the history and development of life on Earth will enjoy it”.
One said that the series has a “solid narrative arc, spectacular CGI and the inimitable voice of Morgan Freeman” to guide viewers through 140 million years of history.
The Guardian’s three-star review said the series boasts visual effects that “look similar to footage of Earth today”. It said the geology and meteorology are “powerfully rendered”, while the dinosaurs are “only a notch below the very best photorealist simulations we have seen”.
The newspaper notes the narration from Freeman, saying the “reliable provider of grand Hollywood vibes” provides “gravelly folk-tale delivery” that is “starting to slide into self-parody”.
A reviewer on the r/Dinonsaur Reddit said: “I really enjoy the scenes being struck together by a ‘plot’ of the development of dinosaurs. I really like the animation in most scenes. Very birdlike and lifelike movement of heads and eyes and such.”
Life on Our Planet was also released on Netflix and produced by Amblin Television and Silverback Films, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and narrated by Morgan Freeman.
The series focuses on the evolutionary history of complex life on Earth. Upon its release, the series received generally mixed reviews, with praise for its visual effects, cinematography, soundtrack and scale.
