Iconic hardware store announces UK closure after 65 years

Browns of Leigh D.I.Y, in Leigh, has announced that it will cease trading after 65 years in business. The beloved hardware store explained that they can “no longer absorb increasing business rates and national insurance rises”.

They previously said on their social media channels: “In a town where most things seem to be closing down – Leigh’s original and longest serving DIY shop is still open.” However, in an unexpected announcement published last month, the family company said: “This is a very sad moment for us, but after 65 years in business, we have decided to close. We can no longer absorb increasing business rates, national insurance rises and energy hikes – there comes a point where it’s time to throw the towel in.

“We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over the years – without you we wouldn’t have lasted this long. We have lots of stock to get rid of so please come in – no reasonable offer refused.

“Sadly going online wouldn’t work for us. Helping people in person is where we shine so online wouldn’t be the same.

“Only this morning we had an elderly gentleman whose walker had lost a bolt – he came in and we fixed it up for him. Then later someone wanted to build his son a mini skateboard ramp – we found all the bits he needed. We have so many stories every day like these and we know they wouldn’t get the same help elsewhere. It’s so sad,” reports Lancs Live.

People took the comments section to share their thoughts, with one saying: “Another nail in Leigh town centre’s coffin, from another local independent business, it’s a sad day. But a sign of the times with online shopping and internet experts. One thing you don’t get online is a personal service, which Browns delivered every time. Good luck with whatever you do in the future, and get Cyril some comfy slippers to relax in.”

Another said: “Aww no way. What a brilliant shop Browns have been for years.” Another added: “End of an era phrase doesn’t do it justice. Our country is run by buffoons.”

Another person wrote: “This is such sad news, you will be missed. You have been a valuable part of the Leigh community. Local shops and businesses truly play a valuable part in building community spirit. Sadly, this is all now being ripped out of many towns.”
