Oscars odds race in huge shake up after major SAG Actor Awards upsets | Films | Entertainment

We’ve had the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs and now more upsets have taken place at the Actor Awards (formerly known as SAG) in Los Angeles last night. Of the four film acting categories, only Best Actress has been consistent across the ceremonies leading up to the Oscars. Jessie Buckley, who won for Hamnet at the Globes and BAFTAs, took home her Actor award last night and continues to be an odds-on shoo-in for the Oscar on March 15. However, it was a totally different story for the other three.

Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) has been the bookies’ favourite for the Best Actor Oscar since the start of the year, after picking up his Golden Globe and beating suspected award rival Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another). However, the 30-year-old lost the BAFTA to Robert Aramayo (I Swear), who isn’t even Oscar-nominated. And now the Actor award has gone to Michael B Jordan for his dual twin performance in Sinners, in a surprise win. As a result, the Creed trilogy star is at 11/8 compared to Chalamet on 10/11 (at William Hill) in a very close race for two stars who are yet to win an Oscar.

Meanwhile, Stellan Skarsgård was the odds-on favourite for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar after winning the Golden Globe for Sentimental Value. However, he lost both the BAFTA and the Actor award to two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn, who was a no-show for both gongs. The latter is now odds-on to win the Oscar for his phenomenal performance in One Battle After Another.

If that wasn’t enough, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is also wide open. Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) won the Golden Globe, Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) took home the BAFTA and now Amy Madigan (Weapons) has the Actor award. All three are up for the Oscar and Madigan is now on 11/8 compared to Taylor’s 13/8. The Academy Awards are very much expected to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s year (he’s never won an Oscar despite 14 nominations to date) with One Battle After Another extremely likely to win Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. Nevertheless, for the first time in years, three acting categories are excitingly unpredictable for once. And no doubt last night’s wins will influence Oscar voters in their final three days of voting, which concludes on March 5 ahead of the ceremony on March 15.
