‘Complex’ Western with perfect rating now on BBC | Films | Entertainment

A Western film boasting a stellar ensemble including legendary cowboy star John Wayne is now streaming on BBC iPlayer. The opening instalment of director John Ford’s celebrated “Cavalry Trilogy”, which also comprises She Wore a Yellow Ribbon released in 1949 and Rio Grande in 1950, showcases a distinguished cast featuring Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple and John Wayne.

The production also marked John Agar’s cinematic debut in the role of Lt. Michael Shannon O’Rourke. Fort Apache, released in 1948, chronicles the story of proud and stubborn Civil War veteran Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda) as he travels to Arizona accompanied by his daughter Philadelphia (Shirley Temple). The Colonel takes up a fresh assignment to lead the Fort Apache garrison, though complications arise as he conflicts with pragmatic Captain Kirby York (John Wayne).

The production holds a flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving 100% approval from audience assessments. One critique stated: “Part of the classic Ford trilogy classic and it’s definitely a classic. John Wayne and Henry Fonda butt heads in a fort whilst dealing with Apaches.”

Another remarked: “Classic John Ford Western featuring great performances by Henry Fonda and John Wayne.”

“Much more complex than you might assume at first glance (the ending is a less obvious riff on the ‘print the legend vs. tell the truth’ theme Ford would return to years later) and it has a constant and oppressive feeling of melancholy that robs any of the ‘heroics’ on display here of the usual triumph you get from most other cavalry westerns,” said a third.

A fourth posted: “A very well done film, if a little over sentimental with regards to the army, by John Ford, with solid performances from Wayne and Fonda. Fort Apache tells the tale of man’s fate with regard to the time period and war. It also has lots of social commentary and was controversial in many ways concerning the questioning of heroes and legends as well as man’s fate in the world, their legacy.

“Interesting to note is that the film was one of the first with superimposed credits during the opening, instead of the usual cards depicting the credits before the opening scene.”

Another shared: “The first of the ‘Cavalry’ trilogy is an excellent film with masterful direction by John Ford and superb performances by John Wayne and Henry Fonda.”

Nevertheless, others also highlighted that the film does seem dated, though one remarked: “Very dated, but it is John Ford who mastered the Western.”

Another noted it can feel sluggish as they commented: “Solid Ford film. The story wanders a little and it isn’t as immediate as The Searchers but it still resonates and has some terrific scenes.”

Another commented: “Really good, got slow a few times. But I enjoyed it for the compelling characters, acting, and Ford’s awesome visuals.”
