A survival disaster film boasting an all-star cast offers a “gripping portrayal” of how eight climbers perished whilst ascending Everest, and it’s now streaming on BBC iPlayer. Featuring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Jake Gyllenhaal, the film, Everest, was filmed on location in Nepal and the Italian Alps, frequently in temperatures of -30°C.

The synopsis for the documentary states: “In the morning of 10 May, 1996, climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin) from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man.

“The mountain itself is a beautiful and powerful presence, but it is also indifferent to human suffering, and ultimately it is always in control. Strong performances and impressive visuals create an immersive experience, even if the emotional depth sometimes feels restrained. Preferably watched on a very big screen.”

“Considering this is based on real people, you can’t rate it as anything other than 100%. Incredible and heartbreaking story,” a third viewer remarked.

“The incredible dedication of these mountain climbers is astounding, and the experience itself is definitely worth watching, but it’s the movie’s second half that will leave you speechless,” another commented.

A fifth observed: “Memorable performances from base camp. The pacing does suffer from frost bite during the first half, but gently defrosts into a devastatingly, emotional retelling of tragic events.”

Several critics noted the film’s sluggish opening, with one viewer highlighting: “There’s about 20 characters to keep track of and only two have any kind of character development. First 45 minutes is a waste of time. Once they actually get climbing (all wearing the same kit so even harder to keep track of who’s who) the film takes off. Great drama, cinematography and acting for the most part.”

Another remarked: “If you like survivalist movies and the suspense they provide, then go ahead and watch it. It is a little slower than I wanted it to be, but still managed to keep my attention and move me.”

“Based on a true story, Everest has the potential to be a good film with good scenic shots, but a two-hour-long take of what should be a documentary ends up being a somber bore,” remarked a third viewer.

Everest is now available on BBC iPlayer.
