‘Unique’ film dubbed ‘absolute cinema’ starring silent A-lister | Films | Entertainment

Nicolas Cage has appeared in countless peculiar and captivating films throughout his extensive career, but one particular offering has been hailed as his “best of all time” by admirers.

Released in 2021, Willy’s Wonderland centres on a character known simply as The Janitor (Nicolas Cage) who finds himself stranded after his vehicle breaks down. To cover the cost of repairs and resume his travels, he secures employment cleaning a dilapidated family restaurant in the vicinity called Willy’s Wonderland.

What remains unknown to him is that he’s been deceived, and his employer anticipates he won’t make it through his shift. This is because the establishment houses eight enormous animatronics possessed by the spirits of murderers who are waiting for their next victim.

Cage’s character doesn’t speak a single line of dialogue throughout the film’s entire duration, yet the adrenaline-fuelled action sequences have garnered praise from admirers, whilst the film itself boasts a substantial cult following. At time of writing it holds a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 67 per cent, whilst critics gave it 60 per cent, reports the Mirror.

The outlandish premise may already ring familiar to some, as it bears an almost identical plot to the enormously successful video game franchise Five Nights At Freddy’s, and its subsequent cinema adaptation launched in 2023.

Critics seemed to appreciate this considerably less than Willy’s Wonderland, granting it merely 33 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers, however, awarded it an impressive 86 per cent.

Enthusiasts will shortly be able to watch Willy’s Wonderland repeatedly at no cost whatsoever, as Tubi are incorporating it into their film collection from March 1.

“Best Nicolas Cage movie of all time, no contest,” one spectator enthused. “Definitely a hidden gem in the rough. A must-see and boredom buster. A mute, badass Nicolas Cage, with a desire to finish the job and dance his heart out on his break, 10/10, absolute cinema,” remarked another.

A further viewer wrote: “One of my favorite movies after viewing for the first time a few years ago. Weird and unique, definitely worth the time, don’t take it too seriously, its best enjoyed with that in mind.”
