Urgent product recall for books, Valentine’s gift and pram — full list

Several urgent product recall notices have been issued this week, with shoppers strongly advised to cease using the affected items immediately. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has refreshed its list to include children’s books, a pushchair and a Valentine’s Day present.

Certain products present potential hazards to users, whilst others have been refused entry at UK borders owing to significant risks. Some recalled items were manufactured and distributed to buyers several years ago. Individuals possessing the products are instructed to verify barcodes and serial numbers to confirm whether their items are affected.

Children’s books

Multiple Peppa Pig and Hey Duggee books have been recalled years following their initial release. These Ladybird publications featuring the beloved characters present a choking risk to youngsters.

Manufactured between 2020 and 2021 throughout Britain, the books pose a danger as small components may become detached from their covers. The OPSS cautioned: “We recommend that owners keep these products out of reach of young children and return it to the distributor for a full refund.”

Publishing house Penguin stated: “If you have a copy from any of the printings listed please take the book away from small children and return it to the retailer you bought it from for a full refund (there is no need to produce a receipt). No other printings of the titles included in this product recall or any other titles are affected by this issue.”

Toy gun

A recall notice has been issued for the Soft Bulalaet Gun manufactured by Smart Toys Limited. The toy was intended to fire water beads from a plastic reservoir, but these present a risk of ‘asphyxiation’ to youngsters.

Purchasers are advised to cease using the item straight away and return it to Smart Toys Limited for a full refund.

Folding washing machine

The OPSS reported that a collapsible washing machine device, favoured for compact laundry loads, was stopped at the border. It’s characterised as a compact washing machine featuring a rubberised collapsible lid, packaged in purple cardboard with barcode 6987857868783.

The device presents a “serious risk” of fire as the plugs fail to meet dimensional standards and are unable to establish a secure connection with the plug socket.

Pram

A baby pram was similarly prohibited at the border owing to it posing a “serious risk” to infants. It’s characterised as a black baby pushchair with red brakes and bears no brand markings.

The pram came from China and displays the barcode BOFDB1KXG9. Its braking mechanism fails to function correctly, which could lead to “potentially hazardous scenarios”.

Valentine’s Day gift

Tesco issued an urgent recall for its Valentine’s Day themed mug this week owing to a burn hazard for consumers. The FandF Home Valentine’s ‘You’ll Do’ XL Mug displays the barcode 5063446721248 and all batches are impacted.

The product in question is a black mug adorned with the white text ‘you’ll do’ and a red heart. Tesco issued a statement saying: “If you’ve bought an affected product, please stop using it immediately. Instead, return it to a Tesco store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.”
