The highly awaited adaptation of Wuthering Heights has at last arrived in picture houses, but which dramatic English landscapes provided its backgrounds?

Just like the novel, it follows antihero Heathcliff’s vengeful campaign against those who tore him from his beloved Catherine Earnshaw.

Its synopsis teases: “Tragedy strikes when Heathcliff falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw, a woman from a wealthy family in 18th-century England,” reports the Mirror.

Audiences will undoubtedly wish to explore the breathtaking settings that Fennell showcases throughout this costume drama, so here are the destinations to include on your itinerary.

Wuthering Heights was predominantly shot throughout Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales, encompassing Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.

Ahead of the romantic drama’s release, the chief executive of slow travel firm Byway shared their perspective on the shooting locations.

Discussing Swaledale, Cat Jones said: “One of the key dales featured on screen, Swaledale’s limestone valley, stone barns and open moorland provide the backdrop for several key exterior scenes.

“Today, it’s a haven for slow travellers, offering peaceful riverside walks, historic mining remains and postcard-perfect villages such as Reeth (which served as a base for the production) and Low Row.”

Jones went on, revealing details about the other key setting: “Arkengarthdale provides rugged valley views and remote moorland backdrops that feature in several exterior sequences.

“Its quiet lanes, high moors and sense of isolation make it ideal for visitors looking to experience the raw, windswept landscapes that define Wuthering Heights.”

Simonstone Hall hotel in Hawes didn’t appear in the romantic drama, but it acted as the cast’s base during filming.

Jake Dinsdale, a managing director at the establishment, informed the BBC that the cast remained for approximately a fortnight throughout the film’s production last year.

“It was so much fun,” Dinsdale remarked. “They ate with us every night, they stayed with us over the weekends.”
