A romantic drama film has been praised as a “masterpiece” and an “absolute classic” – and is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer. The film is based on a 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks and features award-winning stars, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
The Notebook follows the love story between two young lovers separated by social class and family pressure in 1940s North Carolina. After Ryan Gosling’s character, Noah, leaves to fight in World War 2, it seems the couple’s relationship is over. But when he returns years later, the film portrays the tale of their heart-wrenching romance as Noah tries to win his love, Allie, back.
The film has won numerous awards since its release in 2004 and is directed by actor, writer and director, Nick Cassavetes. Despite receiving an average rating of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film gained a more successful 7.8 out of 10 stars on IMDb.

Nevertheless, the romantic drama is often praised as an “absolute classic”.
One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer wrote: “An absolute classic. Best love story movie I have ever seen and the actors are phenomenal.”
Another said: “An inspiring love story, full of chaos, romance, beauty, and pain. There is charm and appeal throughout and for some it may be very relatable. Very heartwarming – and maybe a tearjerker?”
One Reddit viewer even went so far as to label the film a “timeless masterpiece”.
The film had its world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 20, 2004, and, although it did not gain immediate attention, The Notebook went on to gross $118.3 million (£93 million) against its $29 million (£21 million) budget.

The film’s awards include the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss for Gosling and McAdams in 2005, and Gena Rowlands won Best Supporting Actress for the drama, at the 9th Golden Satellite Awards.
While some fans have criticised the film for portraying a “toxic romance”, many fans appreciate the film for its story, praising actors, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, for bringing the book’s characters to life.
One Reddit fan wrote: “Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams breathe life into their characters with such authenticity that you can’t help but root for their love story. The chemistry between them is palpable, drawing viewers into a world where love conquers all, even against seemingly insurmountable odds.”
They concluded: “The Notebook is not just a movie; it’s a masterpiece that continues to resonate with me on a deeply personal level. It’s a timeless reminder of the power of love and the enduring impact of storytelling done right.”
