Michigan State University has received a $50 million commitment from the family-based Leinweber Foundation to build a new, interdisciplinary center that combines digital learning, cutting-edge research and entrepreneurship.

It is the largest gift ever given to a facility at MSU, the university said. The building will be known as the Leinweber Center for Engineering and Digital Innovation, pending approval by the board of trustees.

In partnership with the state of Michigan, the 265,000-square-foot facility will support industries vital to Michigan’s economy, serving as a hub for data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductor research and esports, among other things. It will also house state-of-the-art laboratories for more than 75 principal investigators and allow 1,000 new engineering students to enroll.

Led by the College of Engineering, the new facility will also bring together the College of Natural Science, Broad College of Business, College of Arts and Letters, College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the College of Social Science.

“We are profoundly grateful to the Leinweber Foundation for this extraordinary commitment,” said MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz. “It represents far more than an investment in a building—it is an investment in people, in opportunity and in Michigan’s future. This investment will help us educate the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators whose work will define the future economy of the state of Michigan and beyond.”

Construction on the new building began early this year, and the university expects it to be largely completed by December 2028.
