UK adults have four true loves – and partners don’t always come first

The average adult has four true loves, which can range from football teams and pets to favourite holiday destinations, according to a new survey. A survey of 2,000 adults unveiled the nation’s real ‘loves’, with partners topping the list, followed by children and dogs.

Nearly a third of men (30%) also consider their football team as a true love. Meanwhile a third of women consider their best friend as a soul mate. Books, drinks and even ex-partners were all also listed as true loves.

The study, commissioned by Matalan ahead of Valentine’s Day, found that while 57% plan to spend February 14th with their partner, 36% of millennials will be spending time with their children.

However, Gen Z are most likely to celebrate ‘Galentines’, with 20% planning to spend the day of romance with friends. Those in this age group are least likely to spend it with a romantic significant other (39%).

Interestingly, the youngest generation listed bands and musicians, films, and even their bed as a true love.

Matalan’s spokesperson said: “Valentine’s is no longer just about romantic relationships. Clearly people feel passionately about various things in life and go as far as saying they love them.

“Whether settling down with your favourite book and a cuppa or going out for a meal with the girls, this February 14th we want to encourage everyone to celebrate with their true loves without feeling it’s only for romantic partners.”

The study also revealed that one in five respondents confessed to having someone or something in their life they love more than their current partner.

Almost two-thirds (64%) argued that a true love doesn’t have to be a person; it can be anything that brings genuine joy. What’s more, over half (55%) believe true love doesn’t have to be reciprocated.

However, 27% admitted to keeping something they adore a secret because it might sound silly when voiced, such as a celebrity crush or a particular food item. And for 46%, the definition of true love has evolved as they’ve aged.

Data from OnePoll.com also showed that 45% thought having multiple true loves enhances life’s enjoyment.

A spokesperson for Matalan commented: “Preferences change with age, in terms of what we look for in a partner or our hobbies and interests.

“This has a direct impact on what we class as true loves. From colleagues and your children to best friends and siblings, celebrate those you love this Valentine’s.”
