Marks and Spencer has closed down one of its stores as part of a major £17million move. The retalier has shut the doors of one of its outlet in Somerset as it welcomes a brand new store.

It opened its brand new flagship store at Bath’s Southgate today (Wednesday, February 4). It comes after a staggering £17million investment. The new store will be open from 9am until 7pm.

Staff have been transfered over to the new branch, which has M&S Food, fashion, home and beauty across four floors. The store is offering fresh market-style food with an in-store bakery, fresh produce from M&S Select Farms, a flower and wine shop.

Natalie Jordan, store manager at Bath SouthGate, said ahead of the opening: “We got the keys to the new store this Monday and the whole team has been working hard to get everything ready for the big reveal on Wednesday.

“Our new location already looks incredible, and I know our customers will absolutely love the space, the layout and the amazing quality, trusted value products we have waiting. The countdown is definitely on and we look forward to welcoming customers to their brand-new flagship M&S store.”

Marks and Spencer’s new store sits in a former Debenhams building, which had been empty since 2021. Bath and North East Somerset Council said the retailer holds a long lease on the Stall Street site, which they have just departed.

In November, it was reported the lease still has a “very significant period” left to run. Marks and Spencer told the Bath Echo that they are continuing to work with the council on the future use of the building.

Laurence Budden, Senior Asset Manager at British Land, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Marks and Spencer to SouthGate Bath; they are the perfect addition to our strong line‑up and further enhance the mix for our visitors. SouthGate’s prominent city centre location and strong transport links create a compelling offer, and with this the scheme is now fully let.

“This opening is a great way to start a transformational year for SouthGate, building on other recent openings, including Sunglass Hut, Zara and Rituals, with more exciting news to come.”
