There are plenty of period dramas available to stream right now, but only a handful manage to surprise viewers and leave them talking long after the credits roll. One film in particular is being praised as a hidden gem, as it first appeared quietly and without much fanfare. Many viewers say they had never even heard of it before pressing play.

It’s a slow-burning story that’s full of heartbreak, romance and mystery. It’s also set against sweeping views of the Scottish coastline. Some viewers have called it one of the most emotional films they have watched in years, despite it coming from a small independent production.

The film is now streaming for free on BBC iPlayer, so it’s one of the easiest period dramas to watch this weekend. But you wouldn’t know it from the lack of promotion. In fact, many viewers say they only found it by accident.

One person said: “How come I’ve never seen any promotion about this masterpiece? I came across this movie from one of the movie recaps channels on YouTube and thank god I did.

“The movie draws you in from the beginning itself with its beautiful ocean and mountains scenery accompanied by a beautiful traditional Scottish music. I don’t know any of the actors but every character is well acted! It deserves far more recognition.”

Another added: “This is the saddest but most beautiful film I have watched in a very long time.

“From the casting of actors (many faces I’ve not seen before), the beautifully made costumes and sets and location are all perfect. This is storytelling at its peak.”

A third wrote: “It’s one of the greatest period dramas ever made. And this is the reason why more independent films should be financed more often.

“I read the book after watching the film and while it’s a little different it’s still brilliant. But this film is something else and people need to watch it.”

The film being praised is The Road Dance, released in 2022 and based on the novel of the same name by John MacKay.

The story is set on the Isle of Lewis in the early years of World War I and follows a young woman whose life is changed forever when the men in her village are called up for service.

It was filmed on location in the Outer Hebrides, giving it a stunning backdrop that plays a big role in the storytelling.

The production began in 2020 during the pandemic, with the cast and crew working in a restored blackhouse village to recreate the period’s look.

The Road Dance premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Film.

It later picked up awards at festivals in Manchester and Sedona and has been praised for its cast, writing and emotional impact.
