A Bake Off winner has shared an easy way to get rid of unwanted carpet dents – and it all comes down to using two common household products.

Indentations can appear in carpets for a variety of reasons, be it furniture placement, leaving a heavy product sitting on the floor a little too long, and more.

It’s caused by the weight of a piece of furniture, or other such object, compressing the carpet pile. If you move your furniture around, it can be frustrating to be stuck with little nicks and hollows all over the floor.

Sunday Times bestselling author Nancy Birtwhistle, who won the fifth season of the Great British Bake Off in 2014, has come to the rescue with a handy and effective tip that’s easy to do.

In a video shared to the popular social media platform TikTok, Nancy shared her method for getting rid of carpet dents.

In the clip, Nancy places a cotton teatowel over the unwanted marks on the floor and then uses the steam function on her iron and runs the iron over the teatowel.

She then shows a before and after image and the carpet dents have been almost completely cured. In the caption, Nancy simply added: “Carpet dents sorted. Clean and Green page 165”.

This is in reference to her book, Clean and Green: 101 Hints and Tips for a More Eco-Friendly Home, which aims to provide “sustainable, natural cleaning tips and hacks will help you take small steps that have a massive positive environmental impact.”

Reviews have praised the book, with TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp declaring: “The book I’ve waited all my life for.”

Meanwhile, Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness said: “From baking, to gardening, to organization, resourcefulness, and just her incredible energy… she creates art out of everything in her life, and takes so much joy in the process.”

Three more ways to banish pesky carpet dents

We always recommend carrying out a patch test before trying these household hacks on your carpet. It’s also worth noting that antique or delicate rugs may need extra care. With that being said, here are some more tips you can try:

Place an ice cube (or several, for larger dents) directly into the dent. Let it melt completely (usually a few hours), then blot with a towel and fluff the fibres. They should look as good as new!

2. Try the blow dryer method

Spray the dent lightly with water or use a damp cloth. Then, use a blow dryer on medium heat to dry the area while gently fluffing the fibres with your fingers or a brush.

3. Vacuum and brush the area

Vacuum the area thoroughly, before using a fork, spoon, or a carpet rake to gently lift and separate the fibres.
