But as the results came through, it was noticed that there appeared to be a lack of British stars nominated, despite the awards being the British Academy of Film Awards.

For Best Leading Actress, Irish actress Jessie Buckley was nominated for her role in Hamnet. Nominees Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Chase Infiniti and Emma Stone are all American, and Renate Reinseve is a Norwegian actress.

There was also only one British star nominated for Best Leading Actor, Robert Aramayo, which also left fans disappointed.

There are also no British actors nominated for Best Supporting Actor, as Paul Mescal is Irish, Benicio del Toro is Puerto Rican, Pete Mullan is Scottish, Jacob Elordi is Australian, Stellan Skarsgard is Swedish and Sean Penn is American.

There were also no films nominated with a British cast, with Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value and Sinners being put forward. However, it is worth noting there is a separate best British film category.

Fans were furious at the lack of British talent being nominated for the British awards, as they took to social media to vent their outrage.

One fan asked: “So you’re telling me you liked Kate Hudson’s performance so much that you skipped nominating a single British actress for the first time… and nominated her?”

Another raged: “It’s called the British Academy (BAFTA), but I’m counting 5 Americans and 1 Brit. Hollywood has officially gentrified the UK awards. At this point, just rename it Oscars: London Branch. The British actors have been displaced from their own home. Brexit was clearly for nothing.”

A third chimed in: “uk is such a sad grimy vassal state cosplaying as 51st state protectorate #Oscars2026 secretly desperately dying to b america is the british film industry this annihilated they can’t find one single movie to nominate?”

A fourth asked: “Hmm. Nothing for your fellow Brit?” A fifth raged: “For the first time in history, there is no British leading actress nominated for a BAFTA.” A sixth said: “Bafta are woke as f***, they’re pathetic. Simply, not all films premiered.”

However, one responded: “It is not true that this is the first year that no british actress is nominated for BAFTA Best Leading. In 2001 no british actresses were nominated, also in 2011.”
