Kim Petras Claims Republic Records Is Blocking ‘Detour’ Album Release
“I’m tired of having no control over my own life or career,” she wrote on X, claiming Republic Records “refused” set a release date for Detour and hasn’t paid her collaborators
Kim Petras wants to return to life as an independent artist, the singer suggested in a series of social media posts. On X, she claimed that her current label, Republic Records, has stalled the release of her upcoming album, Detour.
“My album has been done for 6 months but my record label has refused to give me a release date or pay my collaborator’s for the work they’ve done,” she wrote on Tuesday, adding in a separate post, “I’m tired of having no control over my own life or career. I want to continue to self fund and self curate my own music. This is why I have formally requested to be dropped by @RepublicRecords.”
Representatives for Republic Records did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.
Petras sounded off across seven posts. In one, she claims that it’s not just the album being held up, but the singles, too. “I also filmed and self funded a music video over 2 months ago for my next single that they also wouldn’t give me a release date for,” she wrote. The video features “9 looks 6 setups 13 pairs of shoes,” she added.
Petras’ latest release “I Like Ur Look” arrived in October following the singles “Freak It” and “Polo.” Her most recent full-length LP, Problématique, arrived in 2023. It marked Petras’ first major project post-“Unholy,” her Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Sam Smith. “I won a grammy 2 years ago…….. the music is TEA. Still no support,” Petras added on Tuesday. “If it’s not a tiktok trend or 80s revival queerbaiting shit these labels have no interest in supporting.”
Petras concluded her series of posts with a hopeful note for her fans. “My fans have waited long enough. I love u guys,” she said. “I’m dropping Detour regardless.”
