‘Underrated’ thriller on Prime has ‘twists that keep you guessing’ | Films | Entertainment
An overlooked 2021 thriller that likely escaped your radar is now streaming on Prime Video.
The Girl Who Got Away (alternatively titled Mother) failed to capture widespread attention upon its initial release, but it sounds perfect for weekend viewing.
Crafted by writer-director Michael Morrissey, this psychological horror revolves around serial kidnapper and killer Elizabeth Caulfield, who finds herself behind bars for abducting and murdering young girls she pretended were her daughters.
Whilst she had five victims, one named Christina successfully escaped. Two decades after her crimes, Elizabeth escapes prison to pursue her only surviving victim.
However, Christina’s own sinister past begins to emerge as her former captor pursues her, reports the Mirror.
American actress Lexi Johnson takes the lead as Christina, alongside Nigerian-British talent Chukwudi Iwuji portraying local police officer Jamie. The Matrix star Kaye Tuckerman completes the ensemble as the tale’s antagonist, Elizabeth.
Despite the mystery thriller failing to attract mass audiences during its launch, it still secured remarkable viewer ratings. Rotten Tomatoes audiences granted it an impressive 87% approval rating.
One Google critic delivered their five-star assessment, stating: “A perfect dose of scary and shock. An interesting theme with a unique plot. Good strong acting. I felt the latter half slipped through quickly with so many revelations coming to light suddenly. But must say this is an underrated gem.”
Meanwhile, an IMDb reviewer gushed: “Was pleasantly surprised that what I thought was happening was close but the twists left me guessing until the very end. A few jump scares but builds a good storyline and the thriller/psychological terror is more the backburn to that. Strong cast performances.”
Another enthusiast declared: “Me and my wifey really liked this movie and were never bored I recommend it and don’t understand the negative reviews.”
This cinema-goer was hitting back at a wave of scathing critiques that the thriller had endured. Whilst some hailed it as essential viewing, others remained thoroughly unimpressed.
“Predictable and bordering on ridiculous,” slated one viewer, while another delivered a harsh blow: “Don’t bother [watching]. It’s not even bad enough to be good.”
Those keen to form their own opinions can stream The Girl Who Got Away now on Prime Video.
