‘Masterpiece’ war film that’s the ‘best movie ever’ now on Amazon Prime | Films | Entertainment

If you’re looking for a harrowing but heartwarming war film to watch, you can’t overlook this hit. Starring Andrew Garfield, the 2016 film has quickly become a favourite for film fans.

Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds.

Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life, without firing a shot, to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

CBR says: “Most war films tend to focus heavily on the conflict or conflicts at the center of the war while exploring the effect it has on specific individuals.

“Hacksaw Ridge is truly unique because it explores one character’s complete opposition to the way war functions overall, and how he believes that non-violent actions are the path to true victory.

“This will always be what makes the film distinct and probably one of the only masterpieces of its kind.”

It has racked up impressive scores on movie rating sites with an overall rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.1/10 on IMDb.

Directed by Mel Gibson, the film is based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector, directed by Terry Benedict.

Desmond T. Doss died at age 87 in 2006 but the film is a reminder of his incredible and historic story which lives on.
